Picking a Domain Name

How to pick the best domain name is one of the first and most important challenges for anyone starting a new Internet business.

The best domain names are short, memorable, easy to spell, and ideally end with .com.

Of course, most of those are gone by now!

Yes Scott, this is the type of thing I really need to hear right now. I have ideas about what I want my business to be, but I did not realize how important a keyword rich domain name is for the bots that categorize the keyword patterns for search engine ranking.

Thank You

Thanks much for the great video.  Does anyone have a direct link to part II where Scott talks about ways to test a domain name?

You can find the free Google Keyword Research tools I mention at 6:49 in this video at this easy to remember URL:  http://www.googlekeywordstool.com.

Thank you Scott.  For someone who is just starting out & not a techie, you helped me look at domain names for the future potential they can bring to my business, not just as a fun play on words that I personally like!

Comment by Scott Fox on January 23, 2013 at 10:17am

Great point, Trisha!  For a domain name cute and clever is not nearly as useful as clear and concise.

Scott,

I must say I wish I would have stopped here first before starting off my membership what you've already answered, plus some. Thank you for some information I had NO idea existed.

Thanks Scott. That is so simple! But we all like to complicate our life's. I will definitely keep this in mind.

Is it really a bad idea to have a .net instead of a .com? The domain name I want is (gasp!) $1200 per year as a .com,Go Daddy is telling me. I checked on other sires, same amount, approx. Holy Cow. But as a .net, it is significantly less expensive. Why?

Very useful and informative, the ways you break it down and explain with such detail. In the past I have listened in on the subject: “tips on choosing a domain name for your new venture” and the guy never broke it down, but made it more of a sales pitch to buy the tips.

Thanks

Happy to help, Frank.  Glad this is useful to you.

And Janine - how about posting your question in the Forum?  We'll be happy to help you work through the merits of .com vs. net.

This answered the exact domain name question I had--how to weigh the suitability of the name for search engines vs. the suitability for human memory. Thanks, Scott!
